In a New York minute
I just got home from a whole week of adventures and unforgettable experiences in the city that never sleeps, New York. There are so many thoughts in my mind that I find it very difficult to pull them out off my head and pinch them down on a piece of paper. I feel speechless and lost for words and I find it hard to sit here and tell you about something that should be seen and felt by yourself and not be told by someone else. But If I should describe New York in a couple of words it would be big, mind-blowing, fantastic, overwhelming, tiring, catchy like a song, exiting, interesting, beautiful, historic, inspiring and beyond your imagination.

I have traveled to New York once before and stayed there for 2 days. I didn’t become much of a fan of the city back then or any other big cities I have visited. As the matter of fact I found New York a bit grey and noisy, but I guess it was because the lack of time there and the importing fact that it was raining. But I felt that people were exaggerating when they say that New York is the city of dreams and it is the place you can make your dreams come true and everything is possible in New York.
Well I guess this trip has turned my view on New York upside down. This time I had more than 2 days to decide what opinion I should have. This time I had the time to really look around and let it all in.

We arrived at New Ark airport at 10ish pm, and we hired a couple of shuffle-busses that will bring us to our home for the next 7 days. When we drove from New Ark towards our hotel which was on 64th str. West on 5th Ave we drove along the cost and we could look over across the water at Manhattan. The night was lightened up by the big skyscrapers, and the water was so still that night. It was so pretty that the light got reflected in the water. It was one of the most beautiful sights I have ever seen. My heart skipped a beat and we rolled down the windows and felt the city-air closing in on us. It was wonderful. All my prejudices were pushed aside and I couldn’t wait to seize this city.

The days in New York were spending on sightseeing. We went to Downtown, Uptown and Empire State building which I can not explain with words. It is really something all people should have a chance to experience. The view was absolutely magnificent. But we were also so lucky to have a chance to visit some of the big companies, like Viacom, which owns MTV, and Tommy Hilfiger where his sister Betsy Hilfiger had taken some time off to personally give us a tour inside the company. It was very exciting to have the opportunity to have a look behind the companies.
I felt very privileged and kind of rich that day we visited Tommy Hilfiger. Well, Betsy Hilfiger started with a short presentation of her brother Tommy Hilfiger, who he was and how he started his big empire. After the presentation she took us to see Tommy Hilfiger’s private office. It was the most beautiful and comfy office with a million dollar view, but it was also very personal in the way that he has decorated the walls with pictures and drawings of his children and people that means something to him. And of course I wanted to sit in his office chair. I mean come on, I just had to try how it would feel like to be a big shot.

After tearing his office apart we went down to the biggest walk-in-closet I have ever seen in my life. It was not so much a closet but more a hall. It houses every single piece of clothe Tommy Hilfiger has ever made. So you can imagine how many there was. When the tour was over Betsy Hilfiger gave us some coupons which gave us 25% discount on every single Tommy Hilfiger specialstores in New York and then me and 5 other were given an invitation to music-night at The Plaza Hotel were Betsy Hilfiger’s son were singing. So in the afternoon we went shopping in the Tommy Hilfiger store on 5th Ave to spend the money we do not have. And then afterwards I strutted down 5th Ave with a Hilfiger bag in my hand back to our hotel to get ready for the night.

We girls got shined up to look like a couple of rich-kids, in high heels some of us could not walk in and went to The Plaza to spend even more money. I need to add in here that my bank is definitely not happy about me after this trip and I need to drink only water and eat air for the rest of this month, because I am beyond broke. But this whole day is something I will remember for the rest of my life and I feel so lucky. I saw New York from a different angel, through a rich man’s eyes and it was really funny to experience that.

This trip was an eye-opener for me when it comes to big cities. I have never experienced a city that holds so many opportunities, and dreams it is waiting and are able to fulfill. New York is a city that cannot be compared and competed with. New York is its own in every single way, because New York is not just big skyscrapers and people in a rush and people outliving their dreams. It is a city that is assembled by many different elements and cultures. The things you can spend your time on in New York are endless and whatever your interest might be, whatever your heart might desire, you can definitely find it in New York. It is right there.
